This is a great little book and resource that will definitely come in handy for parents, carers, teachers and leaders of children. In our fast paced, ever changing culture and developments, how can we keep up? Never mind keeping up, how can we be helping our children in a culture that is moving away rapidly from biblical principles and Christ?
Andrew & Christian Walker (husband & wife) help us think about these topics but also break down into age appropriate explanations. They call it first floor (ages 4- 8), second floor (9-12) and third floor (12-16). Building on a basic truth and then adding layers at each floor, for parents to decide where it is best to start, continue and develop the conversation.
Abortion, sexuality, identity and transgenderism are some of the topics included. The 10 chapters are about 15 pages in length, so not exhaustive nor overwhelming to read. Each topic is given a short overview from a Biblical perspective with succinct points to grasp hold of, as well as summarising key points in bullet point form. Having introduced each topic, there is a memory verse that could be learned for the Biblical truth to be ingrained in their hearts, followed be suitable Biblical truths and conversation starters (a few questions to help lead the conversation with your children).
Why should you have and use this book? Well, the Andrew puts it like this in the introduction of the book. When asked about navigating the cultural challenges with children and equipping them, this is his answer.
"You must catechize and disciple your children at ever-younger ages intentionally, or else the culture will do so unintentionally and with even greater effectiveness.
If you don't teach your children, the world will.
Moreover, if you think two hours per week in church and the well-intentioned efforts of your youth pastor excuse you from having to talk about these topics (some of them very awkward), then I regret to inform you that your outlook needs to change."
The reality is our children are exposed at an ever younger age to things we would rather not have them exposed to. Beyond just classmates, but with technology, YouTube, kids TV etc. Never mind their own observations and reading skills as my wall through a shop or drive the car. Their inquisitive minds need to be pointed in the right direction, for they pick things up by osmosis, and influenced for good and God or negatively.
This is a great resource and equipping books for those engaged in the Spiritual life of children and teens. Pointing us and them to the ways of Christ and the grace of God, as you try and navigate the ever changing and choppy waters of our culture and help them follow Jesus.
